The first Shia Ithna’asheri settler in Milton Keynes was from Pakistan in the year 1964. However, in 1972 more Ithna’asheris arrived from East Africa and settled around Bletchley, whilst a new city was being built around them. The community, By The Grace of Allah, has increased to around 75 families and is growing by the year. The settlers in the new city of Milton Keynes came from all over the UK, and along came members of our community, who were already settled in the UK from East African countries. By the early eighties more émigrés moved in to the take advantage of new residential developments that were cheap and convenient for commuting to the City of London , . Certain essential activities began to take shape – Madrassa for the children and other communal activities were organised. These initially begun in the privacy of homes but gradually such activities were carried out in hired council meeting halls. In 1983, the Community drafted its first constitution and registered as a Charity in the UK. We also became a member of the World Federation and The European Council thereafter. The project to give the community its own centre was embarked upon in 1983. The plan was to build the centre over three phases – Imambargah, Madrassa and the Baitu’Salaat. The first phase, that of an Imambargah, was completed in 1988 and the second phase, that of a Madrassa, was completed in 1993. The plans to complete the third phase, that of Baitu’Salaat, will Insha’Allah be embarked upon soon. In 1992/93 the community managed to acquire its own cemetery on the grounds of the Crownhill Cemetery. We have our own facilities, with a sub-committee responsible for all burial arrangements. The centre is now officially registered as a Place of Religious Worship and also as a religious place for the Solemnisation of Marriages. |
